Calling New Musicians

The Starlight Symphony Orchestra will be holding auditions for open positions on Sunday, August 22 from 2:00-5:00 P.M.
at the First Baptist Church on Winter's Mill Parkway at RR 12 in Wimberley.

We are auditioning for:
Winds, Percussion, and Strings

Come work with our Artistic Director and Conductor
Dr. Don Miller
of the University of Texas, San Antonio.

This is what Dr. Miller says about auditions:

As the conductor of the Starlight Symphony Orchestra, I’d like to get to know all new members of the orchestra as musicians and as people. It is important for me to know what your goals are with your music and the auditions will give us an opportunity to have a conversation. The auditions are meant to be casual and a "get-to-know-you" session, not a situation for anxiety or stress. I know your music is important to you and I respect your talent. I look forward to meeting with you and learning about your music.

Regular rehearsals are on Thursday evenings 7:15-9:15, also at the First Baptist Church of Wimberley. The first rehearsal for the fall program will be on August 26, 2010.

The Starlight Symphony Orchestra is accepting new players. The orchestra is a hybrid of professional, semi-professional, amateur, and student musicians. Advanced students 8th grade or above from any of our area schools also are invited to audition. More information on the auditions follows below. Please contact Pat Surguy by email to schedule an audition time.

Auditions for the Fall Concerts

Sunday, August 22 at the First Baptist Church, 15951 Winters Mill Parkway, in Wimberley (on the corner with RR 12), starting at 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.. Contact Pat Surguy to schedule your audition.

All new players must audition. Auditioning is required for placement on our substitute list, as well. Auditions will be held for:

Winds
Percussion
Strings

Prepare to play two pieces for our conductor, Dr. Don Miller. The music should be something that you feel comfortable playing and demonstrates your playing level and ability. Each player is asked to play pieces that demonstrate contrasting styles, i.e., something to show technical ability (faster tempo) and something to show melodic tonality (slower tempo.) The selections should be short (3-5 min); prepare no more than ten minutes of music.

Rehearals: The first rehearsal of the fall begins on Thursday, August 26, 2010 in the First Baptist Church in Wimberley. Here is a map.

The SSO performs four concert programs per year. Each program is performed twice, in different venues and communities.
